Music & Culture Festivals in November

The Dominican Republic Jazz Festival turns the north coast into an open-air stage for a long weekend each year. Founded around 2004 and among the oldest jazz festivals in the Caribbean, it stages free and ticketed concerts on the beach at Cabarete and across Sosua, Puerto Plata and Santiago, mixing Grammy and Latin Grammy winners with Dominican players. It is run by FEDUJAZZ, an education foundation whose proceeds pay for tuition-free music lessons for local children, and the festival week doubles as a set of open workshops in Sosua where those students play alongside visiting artists. Concerts on the sand at sunset, with the trade wind dropping, are the signature image.

Nyege Nyege Festival is East Africa's most important underground music gathering, four days and nights of sound on the banks of the Nile near Jinja. Born in 2015 out of the Nyege Nyege music collective and its record label, it has grown into a pan-African meeting point that draws hundreds of artists from across the continent and beyond, running multiple stages from electronic and experimental to traditional East African music, with the crowd dancing more or less non-stop. The name is Luganda for the irresistible urge to move, and that is the whole idea. It is as much a scene and a statement as a festival, and it remains the clearest single window into contemporary African club and experimental music. The 2026 edition runs November 19 to 22 at Adrift Overland Camp by Kalagala Falls.

The Full Moon Party has run on Haad Rin beach every month since the 1980s, and it is still the clearest example anywhere of a beach party that grew into a full travel-circuit institution rather than a one-off event. Tens of thousands of people gather monthly for a night of open-air sound systems, fire shows, and body paint stretching the length of the beach, with almost no formal structure beyond a beach-entry fee. It works precisely because it never became overly commercialized: no advance tickets, no assigned areas, just a beach, a full moon, and whichever sound systems set up that month. For a specific kind of traveler, it remains the single most reliable big night out in Southeast Asia.

The Macao International Music Festival is the city's flagship autumn arts event, its Music October, filling the peninsula with concerts for about a month every year. First staged in 1987 and run by the government Cultural Affairs Bureau, it spreads performances across the modern Macao Cultural Centre and the atmospheric heritage venues of the old town, from the baroque St Dominic's Church to the neoclassical Dom Pedro V Theatre inside the UNESCO World Heritage zone. The program deliberately braids East and West, pairing opera, symphonic concerts and chamber music with Chinese works and crossover projects, and building each edition around a theme. Hearing a concert inside a centuries-old Macau church or the little Dom Pedro V, one of the oldest Western theaters in China, is the draw as much as the music itself.

Running since 1999, Iceland Airwaves is the definitive city-wide showcase festival of the North Atlantic: for three November days, dozens of downtown venues, from the Harpa concert hall to record shops and churches, host Icelandic breakouts alongside international acts, and the free off-venue program spills into every bar with a corner for a drum kit. The festival launched or amplified nearly every Icelandic export since Sigur Ros, and its scale keeps it walkable: you queue with the bands, and the biggest room in town holds a couple of thousand people. November is dark, cold, and cheap by Reykjavik standards, and aurora between sets is a real possibility.
