Why here
The Full Moon Party has run on Haad Rin beach every month since the 1980s, and it is still the clearest example anywhere of a beach party that grew into a full travel-circuit institution rather than a one-off event. Tens of thousands of people gather monthly for a night of open-air sound systems, fire shows, and body paint stretching the length of the beach, with almost no formal structure beyond a beach-entry fee. It works precisely because it never became overly commercialized: no advance tickets, no assigned areas, just a beach, a full moon, and whichever sound systems set up that month. For a specific kind of traveler, it remains the single most reliable big night out in Southeast Asia.
Best months
Held every month on the night of the full moon, so there is always a party within roughly four weeks of any visit; exact dates shift with the lunar calendar and are published well in advance. December and January parties, which often overlap with New Year's, draw the largest crowds; the dry season (December to April) is also the most comfortable time to be on the beach for hours. Rainy season parties (May to November) still happen, just with a real chance of a downpour.
Getting there & around
Fly into Koh Samui (USM) and take a ferry to Koh Phangan, or ferry directly from Surat Thani. Entry is a flat cash fee (around 200 baht) paid at gates on Haad Rin beach on the night; official sources are clear that no advance online tickets exist; and any site selling them is a scam. Accommodation in Haad Rin itself books out and prices spike around the party date, so many visitors base elsewhere on the island and take a short taxi or songthaew in for the night.
