Wildlife Safaris
- Bwindi Impenetrable National ParkJan Feb Jun Jul Aug Sep DecBwindi Impenetrable is the great mountain gorilla forest. Around half of the world's surviving mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) live on these steep, misted slopes, split across habituated families in the Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. A standard trek gives you one hour with a family once you find them; the gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga gives four hours alongside researchers as a family is slowly accustomed to people. You share the forest with forest elephant, L'Hoest's monkey and more than 350 bird species, but the gorillas are why you come. Nkuringo Safaris runs treks from its own lodge on the Nkuringo rim, and Great Lakes Safaris arranges permits and guided trips from Kampala. Permits are capped and sell out; book months ahead.
- Kibale Forest National ParkJan Feb Jun Jul Aug Sep DecKibale holds the densest primate population in East Africa, and its headline animal is the chimpanzee. Roughly 1,500 chimpanzees live in the forest, several communities habituated for tracking. A morning trek puts you on foot beneath a family as they feed, groom, hoot and move through the canopy; the chimp habituation experience lets you spend a full day with researchers as a community is slowly accustomed to people. Kibale also has red colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey and black-and-white colobus among its thirteen primate species, and the Bigodi wetland on its edge is a birding walk in its own right. Churchill Safaris and Mwanzo Tours Uganda both run chimp treks and wider circuits from Kampala.
- Murchison Falls National ParkJan Feb Jun Jul Aug Sep DecMurchison Falls is built around one violent piece of geography: the Victoria Nile squeezed through a seven-metre rock cleft, dropping in a thunderous plume before spreading into a game-rich delta. A boat cruise upriver to the base of the falls runs past pods of hippo, huge Nile crocodile and elephant coming down to drink, with the falls building ahead of you. North of the river the savanna carries elephant, lion, buffalo, Jackson's hartebeest, Uganda kob and one of Africa's most important populations of the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. Wild Frontiers Uganda operates the launch cruises from its jetty on the south bank, and Bamboo Ecotours runs game drives and river trips as part of guided circuits.
- Queen Elizabeth National ParkJan Feb Jun Jul Aug Sep DecQueen Elizabeth is Uganda's great savanna theatre, set on the Rift Valley floor with the Rwenzori snowline behind it. The Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway linking Lakes Edward and George, draws one of the highest concentrations of hippo and Nile crocodile in Africa, and a boat cruise along it runs a gauntlet of elephant, buffalo and enormous flocks of waterbirds. On the Kasenyi plains, lion and leopard hunt herds of Uganda kob, and in the remote southern Ishasha sector lions famously drape themselves in the branches of fig trees through the heat of the day. Prime Uganda Safaris and Kabiza Wilderness Safaris run game drives and the Kazinga launch as part of guided Uganda circuits.
