Why here
The Rwenzori are Africa's strangest big mountains: a snowbound, glaciated range sitting almost on the equator, the Mountains of the Moon that ancient geographers guessed fed the Nile. Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, at 5,109 metres, is the third-highest point in Africa and a genuine glacier summit, reached across a shrinking ice cap that demands rope, crampons and an ice axe. The multi-day approach climbs through a surreal sequence of vegetation zones, from montane forest to bamboo to open moorland studded with giant lobelia and groundsel, and across notorious deep bog. Two Uganda Wildlife Authority concessionaires run the mountain: Rwenzori Mountaineering Services on the Central Circuit from Nyakalengija, and Rwenzori Trekking Services on the southern Kilembe Trail.
Best months
The Rwenzori are wet for much of the year; the drier windows of late December to February and June to August give the best chance of stable weather and firmer ground, though rain and mist are always possible. A full Margherita summit trip runs seven to nine days and crosses glacier, so basic mountaineering skills and good fitness are needed. Nights are cold and altitude is real; acclimatisation is built into the itineraries.
Getting there & around
The trailheads sit near Kasese in western Uganda, reachable by road from Kampala or a flight to Kasese airstrip. Both concessionaires supply guides, porters and hut or camp accommodation and handle park fees with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The Central Circuit and Kilembe Trail are separate routes run by separate operators; pick one for your booking. Glacier gear can be hired locally or brought in.

Working from Nyakalengijo near Kasese, it provides the guides, porters, hut accommodation and glacier gear for summit attempts, plus shorter three-to-nine-day treks into the range's glacial valleys.
Rwenzori Trekking Services
GuideFounded in 2010, Rwenzori Trekking Services is the authorized operator of the Kilembe (southern) route into the Rwenzori Mountains, an approach that climbs through bamboo and heather zones to the high glacial lakes and Margherita Peak. It runs treks from one to ten days with guides, porters and mountain huts, and also guides on Mount Elgon.
