Why here
Kibale holds the densest primate population in East Africa, and its headline animal is the chimpanzee. Roughly 1,500 chimpanzees live in the forest, several communities habituated for tracking. A morning trek puts you on foot beneath a family as they feed, groom, hoot and move through the canopy; the chimp habituation experience lets you spend a full day with researchers as a community is slowly accustomed to people. Kibale also has red colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey and black-and-white colobus among its thirteen primate species, and the Bigodi wetland on its edge is a birding walk in its own right. Churchill Safaris and Mwanzo Tours Uganda both run chimp treks and wider circuits from Kampala.
Best months
Chimpanzee tracking runs year-round, with the drier months of June to September and December to February easier underfoot. Morning treks have the highest success rate. The forest is warm and humid; expect some mud and a walk of one to three hours to reach the chimps. Permits are issued per session and should be booked ahead in high season.
Getting there & around
Kibale sits near Fort Portal, about five to six hours from Kampala by road, and pairs naturally with Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south. Chimp tracking and the habituation experience use separate permits issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Base yourself near the Kanyanchu tracking point. Porters and guides are arranged through the park and operators.
