A dense, ancient rainforest in Uganda's far southwest, home to roughly half the world's mountain gorillas. A UNESCO World Heritage Site where trekkers hike steep, tangled slopes to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family.
Why here
Bwindi Impenetrable is the great mountain gorilla forest. Around half of the world's surviving mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) live on these steep, misted slopes, split across habituated families in the Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. A standard trek gives you one hour with a family once you find them; the gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga gives four hours alongside researchers as a family is slowly accustomed to people. You share the forest with forest elephant, L'Hoest's monkey and more than 350 bird species, but the gorillas are why you come. Nkuringo Safaris runs treks from its own lodge on the Nkuringo rim, and Great Lakes Safaris arranges permits and guided trips from Kampala. Permits are capped and sell out; book months ahead.
Best months
Gorilla trekking runs year-round. The two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, make the forest trails less slippery and are the most comfortable, though rain is possible in any month. Treks range from one to six hours of hard walking on steep, muddy ground at altitude; a reasonable level of fitness helps. Permits are limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day.
Getting there & around
Bwindi is a long haul from Kampala, eight to ten hours by road or a scheduled flight to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip then a transfer. The four trekking sectors are far apart, so book accommodation in the sector that matches your permit. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and must be secured well in advance through an operator. Porters are available and worth hiring.
