A three-tier waterfall on the foothills of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, in Arabica coffee country near Kapchorwa. A walkable landscape of cascades, cliffs and smallholder farms, and the gateway to Mount Elgon's caldera treks.
Why here
Sipi Falls is the best day-hiking country in Uganda that most visitors never reach. Three linked waterfalls drop off the western wall of Mount Elgon, and a half-day loop on foot takes you between all three, through smallholder farms and along cliff edges with the plains of Karamoja opening below. This is Bugisu Arabica country, so most walks fold in a coffee farm visit, following the bean from picking and pulping to roasting over a fire and a cup at the end. The bolder cascade can be abseiled on fixed ropes. For longer legs, Sipi is a common staging point for treks up into the Mount Elgon caldera, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world. Sipi Falls Tours and Sipi Falls Explorers are both locally owned guiding teams born on the mountain.
Best months
The trails are walkable year-round. The drier stretches of June to September and December to February give the firmest footing, while the wet months make the falls fuller and the paths slicker. The main three-falls loop is a moderate half-day walk; abseiling and longer Mount Elgon treks are booked separately. Mornings are clearest before cloud builds on the escarpment.
Getting there & around
Sipi sits above Kapchorwa in eastern Uganda, roughly a full day from Kampala by road via Mbale or Jinja. Local guiding teams run the falls loop, coffee tours and abseiling and can arrange the guides and permits needed for Mount Elgon National Park treks. A night or two in Sipi lets you walk at the best light and pair the falls with coffee and the caldera.

GuideFounded and run by Kevin, a guide born and raised in Sipi village, Sipi Falls Explorers leads hikes to the area's three waterfalls, a 100-metre abseil, and seed-to-cup coffee tours on the Mount Elgon foothills at around 1,780 metres. The locally owned team also arranges village and cultural walks and longer treks into Mount Elgon National Park.
