The headline sites are the Spanish colonial defences of Old San Juan, the clifftop Castillo San Felipe del Morro and the vast Castillo San Cristobal, begun in the 16th century to guard one of Spain's most important New World harbours and inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983. Walking their ramparts, tunnels and sentry boxes above the Atlantic is a history lesson with a sea breeze. A short drive inland, the museum district of Santurce anchors the island's fine-art story, from the colonial portraitist Jose Campeche and 19th-century landscapes to contemporary Puerto Rican work and street murals. Between the forts, the museums and the blue-cobbled streets in between, San Juan rewards a slow couple of days of looking.

San Juanyear-roundBomba is the oldest music of Puerto Rico, an Afro-Puerto Rican tradition of drum, dance and song that grew on the sugar plantations from the rhythms carried by enslaved West Africans, and San Juan is where you can step inside it. Unlike a stage show, bomba is a conversation: a dancer steps into the circle and challenges the lead drummer, the primo, who must follow and answer every movement on the barrel drum while the buleador drums and the maraca hold the base rhythm and the chorus sings call-and-response. The city's Santurce district, long a working-class Afro-Puerto Rican neighbourhood, is the living centre of the form, home to the Cepeda family dynasty that safeguarded bomba and plena through the 20th century and to schools that welcome visitors into drum, dance and song classes and open community gatherings called bombazos. Learning even the first exchange between dancer and drummer, hands stinging on the drumhead, teaches more about Puerto Rico than any museum label.

Scuba Diving

La PargueraApr May Jun Jul Aug SepLa Parguera is Puerto Rico's best wall dive, a stretch of reef edge on the quiet southwest coast that falls away into the abyss. About twenty minutes out from the village, the reef top sits around 55 to 65 feet and then drops as a sheer wall past 130 feet before shelving off toward the deep sea floor, a face hung with black coral, sea fans, sponges and swim-throughs and patrolled by turtles, eagle rays and the occasional passing pelagic. Because the south coast gets far less swell and rain than the north, visibility here is often the clearest on the island, and the wall runs for miles with more than thirty named sites, so operators pick the section that fits the day and the group. Back in the village, La Parguera is also one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays and a base for mangrove-channel boat trips, so a dive day pairs easily with a glowing-water night. It is an unhurried, local-feeling town, a long way in spirit from the San Juan resorts.

Surfing

On the island's northwest tip, where the Atlantic swings around into the Mona Passage, a run of reef and point breaks lights up through the northern-hemisphere winter, from the gentle beach peaks that beginners learn on to the big, cold-season walls of Tres Palmas. The town earned its place in surf history in 1968, when it hosted the World Surfing Championship and drew the sport's first travelling pros to the Caribbean. Domes, named for the retired nuclear dome on the point, and Maria's are the everyday favourites, working best on clean north and northwest swells from roughly October to March. Tres Palmas comes alive only on the biggest days, a big-wave reef that draws experienced chargers when a strong swell hits. Water stays warm enough for boardshorts year round, the vibe is unhurried, and a mixed-ability group can spread across breaks within a few minutes of the same town.

Trekking / Hiking

El YunqueJan Feb Mar Apr DecEl Yunque is the only tropical rainforest managed by the US Forest Service, and it packs a huge range of walking into a compact, accessible massif just an hour east of San Juan. Warm rain falls almost daily on the Sierra de Luquillo, feeding rivers, natural swimming pools and waterfalls like La Mina and La Coca, and cloaking the higher slopes in dwarf cloud forest. Trails run from paved fifteen-minute strolls to the exhaust of your legs on the climb to El Yunque Peak at over 1,000 metres, where the vegetation shrinks to wind-stunted palms and the views open over the coast on a clear morning. The forest is loud with the two-note call of the coqui, the tiny frog that is Puerto Rico's unofficial mascot, and it is one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot. Guided walks, especially after dark, turn a wet green blur into a legible ecosystem, and a permit system now manages the busiest northern trailheads.

Fiestas de Santiago ApostolLoizaJulThe Fiestas de Santiago Apostol are the fullest expression of Afro-Puerto Rican culture on the island, and Loiza is the only place to witness them. Held each July around the feast of Saint James the Apostle, the celebration blends a Catholic saint's procession with West African tradition into something entirely Loiza's own. Masked vejigantes, wearing horned masks carved from coconut shell and painted in fierce reds and blacks, roam the streets in caped costumes representing the Moorish enemy, while paso fino horses carry images of three different Santiagos through the town over successive days and bomba drums drive the whole thing forward. The festival grew from Loiza's history as a community of free and enslaved Africans, and it remains community-run rather than staged, with no central ticket office. The vejigante mask itself, now a symbol of Puerto Rico, is rooted here in families like the Ayalas. Standing in the street as the drums build and the masked figures pass is the single best way to understand the island's African heritage from the inside.
