Why go
The Fiestas de Santiago Apostol are the fullest expression of Afro-Puerto Rican culture on the island, and Loiza is the only place to witness them. Held each July around the feast of Saint James the Apostle, the celebration blends a Catholic saint's procession with West African tradition into something entirely Loiza's own. Masked vejigantes, wearing horned masks carved from coconut shell and painted in fierce reds and blacks, roam the streets in caped costumes representing the Moorish enemy, while paso fino horses carry images of three different Santiagos through the town over successive days and bomba drums drive the whole thing forward. The festival grew from Loiza's history as a community of free and enslaved Africans, and it remains community-run rather than staged, with no central ticket office. The vejigante mask itself, now a symbol of Puerto Rico, is rooted here in families like the Ayalas. Standing in the street as the drums build and the masked figures pass is the single best way to understand the island's African heritage from the inside.

What to expect
The Fiestas de Santiago Apostol run in late July, tied to the fixed feast of Saint James on 25 July. The masked processions traditionally fall on 25, 26 and 27 July, honouring the men's, women's and children's Santiago in turn, within a wider stretch of roughly ten days of religious services, bomba, food stalls and music. Because it is a community and religious festival rather than a ticketed event, exact daily programmes are set locally and are best confirmed close to the dates through the town and Puerto Rico's tourism board. July is hot and humid, and the street events run into the evening.
Getting there & around
Loiza sits on the coast about 30 to 45 minutes east of San Juan by car, past Piñones. There is no formal festival venue or box office; the processions move through the town's streets and around the Church of Santiago Apostol, so the practical approach is to base in or near San Juan and drive out for the key procession days. Parking is informal and the town is busy during the fiestas, so arrive early, go on foot once there, and treat it as a respectful cultural and religious observance rather than a show.
