Wildlife Safaris in Mosquito Bay
A shallow, mangrove-enclosed bay on the south coast of Vieques island, Mosquito Bay is recognised by Guinness World Records as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Dense populations of the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense flash blue-green light when the water is disturbed, so paddles, fish and swimming turtles leave glowing trails on a dark night.

Mosquito Bay on Vieques is the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth, a title Guinness World Records made official, and paddling it after dark is one of the strangest, most beautiful natural experiences in the Caribbean. The bay is a shallow lagoon almost sealed off from the sea by a narrow mouth, which traps warm, nutrient-rich water and a huge concentration of single-celled dinoflagellates. Brush the surface with a paddle or trail a hand overboard and the organisms fire off a cold blue-green light, so every stroke throws a comet-tail of glow and fish streak beneath the kayak like meteors. Because Vieques has almost no light pollution, the effect is far stronger here than at Puerto Rico's mainland bays, and on a moonless night the contrast is dramatic. Guided kayak trips run year round, timed to the darkest part of the lunar cycle, and swimming is not allowed in order to protect the microorganisms that make the whole thing work.
Best months
The glow is visible year round but strongest on dark, moonless nights, so operators schedule around the new moon and skip the nights near a full moon when moonlight washes the effect out. Rain is possible any month; the drier, calmer window runs roughly December to April. Tours are gentle guided paddles rather than a workout, suitable for beginners, and swimming in the bay is prohibited to protect the dinoflagellates. Because Vieques is reached only by ferry or a short flight, most operators require you to stay overnight on the island to join a bay tour, especially in summer.
Getting there & around
Vieques is reached by the passenger and car ferry from Ceiba on the main island, about an hour east of San Juan, or by a short flight from San Juan or Ceiba to the island's small airport. Plan to stay overnight, as most bay tours require it and the last ferries leave before the night paddles finish. Kayak trips launch from the south coast near Esperanza after dark and last around two hours; book ahead, bring insect repellent that you apply before arriving rather than in the bay, and expect an unlit, bumpy road out to the launch.
