Surfing in Rincon
A laid-back town on Puerto Rico's northwest corner where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet, Rincon is the island's surf capital. Winter swells wrap into a string of reef and point breaks such as Domes, Maria's and Tres Palmas, and the town hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship that first put Puerto Rico on the surfing map.

Rincon is where Puerto Rico surfs. On the island's northwest tip, where the Atlantic swings around into the Mona Passage, a run of reef and point breaks lights up through the northern-hemisphere winter, from the gentle beach peaks that beginners learn on to the big, cold-season walls of Tres Palmas. The town earned its place in surf history in 1968, when it hosted the World Surfing Championship and drew the sport's first travelling pros to the Caribbean. Domes, named for the retired nuclear dome on the point, and Maria's are the everyday favourites, working best on clean north and northwest swells from roughly October to March. Tres Palmas comes alive only on the biggest days, a big-wave reef that draws experienced chargers when a strong swell hits. Water stays warm enough for boardshorts year round, the vibe is unhurried, and a mixed-ability group can spread across breaks within a few minutes of the same town.
Best months
The surf season runs on northern-hemisphere winter swells, roughly October to March, when north and northwest groundswell wraps into Rincon's reefs and points. Summer is small and better for learning in flat, warm water. Domes and Maria's are the reliable performance breaks, while Tres Palmas is a big-wave reef that only breaks on the largest winter swells and is for advanced surfers. Most breaks work over rock and reef rather than sand, so booties and a guide who knows the tides and entries help. Water is warm all year and wetsuits are not needed.
Getting there & around
Rincon sits about two to two and a half hours by car west of San Juan, and closer to the regional airport at Aguadilla, which has some mainland US flights. The town spreads along the coast road with breaks signposted off it, so a rental car makes moving between Domes, Maria's, Sandy Beach and Tres Palmas easy. Surf schools are clustered in town and at Sandy Beach and include board rental and a shuttle to whichever break suits the day's swell and your level.

Puntas Surf School
SchoolPuntas Surf School is run by Melissa Taylor, who moved to Rincon in 2002 and is described as the longest-standing surf instructor in town. Her team carries more than twenty-five years of combined teaching experience and works the beginner-friendly beaches and points of Puerto Rico's west coast. Lessons run in small groups and privately, starting in the whitewater before progressing out to the reef and point breaks around Rincon and the Puntas neighbourhood, with boards provided.
Rincon Surf School
SchoolRincon Surf School opened in 1999 and is the longest-running surf school in Rincon, on Puerto Rico's west coast. It teaches novice through advanced surfers with ISA-certified coaches and is a member of the Federacion de Surf de Puerto Rico. Based at its own beachside resort near the town's reef and beach breaks, it pairs small-group and private lessons with board rental and multi-day surf-and-stay packages, matching students to the break and conditions that fit their level.
