Scuba Diving in La Parguera
A small fishing village on Puerto Rico's southwest coast in the municipality of Lajas, La Parguera sits beside a maze of mangrove cays and its own bioluminescent bay. Offshore, The Wall, a reef shelf that drops from around 60 feet into the deep, is the southwest coast's premier scuba site.
Why here
La Parguera is Puerto Rico's best wall dive, a stretch of reef edge on the quiet southwest coast that falls away into the abyss. About twenty minutes out from the village, the reef top sits around 55 to 65 feet and then drops as a sheer wall past 130 feet before shelving off toward the deep sea floor, a face hung with black coral, sea fans, sponges and swim-throughs and patrolled by turtles, eagle rays and the occasional passing pelagic. Because the south coast gets far less swell and rain than the north, visibility here is often the clearest on the island, and the wall runs for miles with more than thirty named sites, so operators pick the section that fits the day and the group. Back in the village, La Parguera is also one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays and a base for mangrove-channel boat trips, so a dive day pairs easily with a glowing-water night. It is an unhurried, local-feeling town, a long way in spirit from the San Juan resorts.
Best months
The southwest coast is the calmest and driest part of Puerto Rico, so La Parguera dives well much of the year, with the best flat-water visibility often in the summer months. The wall starts around 55 to 65 feet and drops past 130, so depth and mild current mean an Advanced certification and good buoyancy help you get the most from it, though shallower reef sites suit newer divers and course students. Water is warm year round. Winter cold fronts can occasionally bring wind and chop from the north, and operators move to sheltered sites when needed.
Getting there & around
La Parguera is on the south coast in Lajas, roughly two hours by car southwest of San Juan and close to the southern hub of Ponce. Dive shops sit right in the village by the waterfront, with short boat rides out to the wall, so a day trip is easy once you are on the south coast. There is no need to stay in San Juan; small guesthouses and the village itself make a relaxed base. A rental car is the practical way to reach this corner of the island.

It is one of the few shops running daily boat trips to The Wall, a 1,500-foot reef shelf about twenty minutes offshore that drops from roughly 60 to 120 feet before falling away to deeper water. PADI instructors handle everything from first dives and open-water certification courses to guided dives across more than twenty local sites.

Its boats reach a string of more than thirty sites about five miles off the Lajas coast, where the wall begins near 55 to 65 feet and drops vertically past 130 feet toward the sea floor.
