Wildlife Safaris
- DamaralandMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctDamaraland is where wildlife survives on a landscape that looks like it should have none. Across the Palmwag concession roams the last free-ranging black rhino population left in the wild anywhere, alongside desert-adapted elephant that walk dry riverbeds for water. You track the rhino on foot with the community rangers of Save the Rhino Trust, the organisation that has patrolled this ground since 1982 and cut poaching here by around 80 percent. Desert Rhino Camp, their joint venture with Wilderness, turns a night's stay into direct funding for those trackers. This is conservation you can walk alongside, not watch from a vehicle.
- Etosha National ParkMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctEtosha is the great waterhole theatre of southern Africa. In the dry months the animals come to you: elephant, black rhino, lion, giraffe and big gemsbok herds file down to a handful of waterholes on the edge of a salt pan you can see from orbit. You do not chase sightings here. You park at Okaukuejo or Halali, where the waterholes are floodlit through the night, and let the whole cast walk in. Chameleon Safaris and Ultimate Safaris both run guided drives in modified pop-top 4x4s, from budget participation camping to naturalist-led premium trips.
