Namib Sky Balloon Safaris is the country's oldest balloon operator, launching at sunrise over the desert and landing to a champagne breakfast on the sand. For a wider sweep, Desert Air flies fixed-wing Cessnas from the lodge airstrip out over the dunes, Sesriem Canyon and the wreck-strewn Skeleton Coast.

The draw is Deadvlei, a white clay pan where camelthorn trees that died around 900 years ago still stand black against apricot dunes and a hard blue sky, the whole scene lit for about twenty minutes at dawn before the contrast blows out. Getting the shot means being at the gate before sunrise and knowing exactly where to stand, which is what a photo-led operator buys you. SwakopmundMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctSwakopmund delivers a landing backdrop that exists nowhere else in skydiving: the Namib Desert, one of the world's oldest, meeting the Atlantic Ocean in a stark, fog-wrapped coastline with almost no visible human infrastructure beyond the town itself. Freefall here means clear horizon at altitude, then descent over wind-sculpted dunes that run directly to the surf line. The dropzone culture is small and unhurried; the experience is defined by scale and emptiness rather than facilities.

Trekking / Hiking

Fish River CanyonMay Jun Jul Aug SepThe Fish River Canyon hike is one of Africa's great walks and its most honest. The trail runs 86km along the canyon floor from Hobas to the hot springs at Ai-Ais, four to five days over sand, boulders and river crossings, carrying everything on your back with no huts and no bail-out points once you drop in. It is open only from May to mid-September, when the heat eases and the river is low, and permits are capped and issued by Namibia Wildlife Resorts to self-sufficient groups of at least three. If the full trail is too much, Fish River Lodge sits alone on the western rim and runs guided two and three-day hikes into the canyon with permits, gear and camps arranged.

Windhoek KarnevalWindhoekMar AprWindhoek Karneval, WIKA, is the strangest survivor in Namibia's calendar: a full German-style Rhineland carnival, founded by the capital's German community in 1952 and still running every autumn with a Prinzenball, a Prunksitzung of costumed speeches and satire, a street parade through the city and a closing Kehraus. Across seventy-odd years it has become a Namibian event rather than a German one, its motto now one Namibia, one nation, one carnival. It runs about ten days in late March and early April, the celebrations landing after Easter. Go for the parade and the balls, and for the plain oddness of Rhineland carnival under a desert sky.
