Photography Expeditions in Sossusvlei

Namibia · Southern Africa

The star dunes and cracked white clay pans of the Namib Sand Sea, including Deadvlei with its 900-year-old blackened camelthorn trees. One of the most photographed landscapes on the continent, and one of the most demanding to shoot well.

Why here

Sossusvlei is a landscape built for a camera and cruel to the unprepared. The draw is Deadvlei, a white clay pan where camelthorn trees that died around 900 years ago still stand black against apricot dunes and a hard blue sky, the whole scene lit for about twenty minutes at dawn before the contrast blows out. Getting the shot means being at the gate before sunrise and knowing exactly where to stand, which is what a photo-led operator buys you. Akari Photo Tours runs small groups with pre-dawn park access, and Focused Escapes builds full Namibia photography itineraries around the dunes, Deadvlei and the Skeleton Coast.

Best months

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Shoot April to October, the cooler and clearer months, when dawn light is soft and the heat is manageable. The best window is the first hour after sunrise and the last before sunset. Deadvlei is a hot 1.1km walk from the 2x4 car park over soft sand, so carry water and go early.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Sossusvlei sits inside Namib-Naukluft park; the gate at Sesriem opens at sunrise, and staying inside the park boundary buys the earliest dune access. The last stretch to the vlei needs a 4x4 or the park shuttle. Most photographers base at Sesriem for two or three dawns.
