Overlanding / Expedition Driving in Namibia
One of Africa's most remote and visually striking countries, ancient Namib Desert, Atlantic fog coastline, and vast wilderness with exceptional wildlife and almost no light pollution. A destination defined by scale and solitude.
Why here
Namibia is the country the self-drive safari was built for. Good gravel roads, low traffic, a stable climate and safe towns let you cover the whole story on your own: dunes at Sossusvlei, the coast at Swakopmund, rhino country in Damaraland, the waterholes of Etosha, all on a single loop from Windhoek in a kitted 4x4 with a roof tent and a fridge. The distances are long and the fuel stops far apart, so the discipline is planning, not bravery. Bushlore hands over fully equipped 4x4s with a proper pre-departure briefing, and Secret Namibia will plan the route, book the camps and put a local guide on the ground if you want a hand.
Best months
The dry season from May to October is the easiest driving and the best game viewing, with settled weather and firm roads. Green season from November to April brings dramatic skies, newborn game and the odd flooded riverbed that can cut a gravel road for a day. Carry water, two spare tyres and more fuel than you think.
Getting there & around
Trips start and end in Windhoek, where the rental companies are based. A typical loop is ten days to two weeks. Book vehicles and popular park campsites months ahead in high season. Gravel-road punctures are the normal failure, so know how to change a tyre before you leave the tar.
