Windhoek Karneval, WIKA, is the strangest survivor in Namibia's calendar: a full German-style Rhineland carnival, founded by the capital's German community in 1952 and still running every autumn with a Prinzenball, a Prunksitzung of costumed speeches and satire, a street parade through the city and a closing Kehraus. Across seventy-odd years it has become a Namibian event rather than a German one, its motto now one Namibia, one nation, one carnival. It runs about ten days in late March and early April, the celebrations landing after Easter. Go for the parade and the balls, and for the plain oddness of Rhineland carnival under a desert sky.

The carnival runs about ten days spanning late March into early April, timed around Easter. The street parade and the balls are the public highlights; the Prunksitzung and Prinzenball are ticketed and sell out. Windhoek's autumn is mild and dry, an easy time to be in the capital.

Everything happens in and around central Windhoek, so the capital's hotels and the international airport make it easy to attend. Buy tickets for the indoor sessions and balls ahead of time; the street parade is free to watch. Pairs naturally with the start or end of a wider Namibia trip.
