Why here
Etosha is the great waterhole theatre of southern Africa. In the dry months the animals come to you: elephant, black rhino, lion, giraffe and big gemsbok herds file down to a handful of waterholes on the edge of a salt pan you can see from orbit. You do not chase sightings here. You park at Okaukuejo or Halali, where the waterholes are floodlit through the night, and let the whole cast walk in. Chameleon Safaris and Ultimate Safaris both run guided drives in modified pop-top 4x4s, from budget participation camping to naturalist-led premium trips.
Best months
May to October is the dry season, when sparse water pulls game to the waterholes and the bush thins right out. July to October is peak. The pan is white and hard in the dry, then green and dotted with flamingos after the summer rains. Low but real malaria risk in the wet months.
Getting there & around
Etosha is a full day north of Windhoek on tar roads. Self-drive is easy on the graded park loops, or join a guided departure. An overnight at a floodlit waterhole camp is worth it for the night traffic. Book park accommodation well ahead in peak season.
