It is the closest thing spirits education has to a terroir tour of Burgundy.

The Baja-Med cuisine movement grew up in the same valley, so the open-air restaurants between tastings are half the argument for coming. August brings the Fiestas de la Vendimia harvest festival, and the whole valley sits 90 minutes from the San Diego border, which makes it the most accessible serious wine region in the Americas that most wine travelers have never seen. The story is grape wine, a different world from Oaxaca's mezcal palenques.

The crowd is the culture, families, chants, masks bought at the door, and the Viernes Espectacular card at 8:30 pm is the flagship, with Tuesday and Sunday shows for the calendar-constrained. Tickets cost less than dinner, the arena sits in Colonia Doctores a short ride from the center, and the whole thing pairs naturally with the city's mariachi nights.
- OaxacaOct NovDay of the Dead is observed across Mexico, but Oaxaca runs the version most people picture when they imagine it: marigold petals carpeting the streets, family altars built for the returning dead, and all-night vigils in cemeteries lit entirely by candlelight. Unlike the parade-first version that has grown up around Mexico City, Oaxaca's celebration is still rooted in the cemeteries and home altars of the surrounding villages, so a visitor who goes with any curiosity ends up genuinely inside the tradition rather than watching it from a barricade. The state tourism office coordinates over a hundred official events across the city and outlying towns during the window, from a monumental sand-carpet installation to neighborhood comparsas, so there is always a next thing to walk to.
