El Potrero Chico is the world's most accessible big-wall sport climbing: bolted limestone multi-pitches up to 20-plus pitches, Timewave Zero, El Sendero Luminoso, rising to 600 meters within walking distance of the campgrounds. Every northern winter the international climbing community migrates here for the same reasons: route density across every grade from 5.7 to 5.14, guiding and camping at a fraction of US and European prices, and the legendary camp scene that turns solo travelers into rope teams by breakfast. AMGA-certified guide services and a volunteer rescue team give the wildness a professional floor.
Best months
November through March is the season, dry and cool; summer is unclimbably hot. The canyon walls give morning and afternoon shade options. Big-line weekends get busy; midweek the walls empty out.
Getting there & around
Fly to Monterrey (MTY), about an hour to Hidalgo; the canyon is a walk from town. Camping and casitas are cheap; book guides for the long routes a few weeks ahead in peak season.
