Surfing in Puerto EscondidoMX
A surf town on Mexico's Pacific coast in Oaxaca, built around Zicatela Beach's legendary heavy shorebreak. Home to the wave nicknamed the Mexican Pipeline, plus a string of calmer, beginner-friendly bays a short walk or taxi from the main strip.
Why here
Zicatela Beach earned the nickname Mexican Pipeline for a reason: it is a powerful, hollow beach break that draws professional surfers chasing barrels most beaches never produce. That reputation could make Puerto Escondido feel like an advanced-only destination, but the town actually spans the full range. A ten-minute walk or short taxi puts you at Carrizalillo or La Punta, sheltered bays with small, forgiving waves where most of the town's surf schools run their beginner lessons. That range, true beginner bays alongside a wave serious surfers travel across the world for, in one town with cheap beachfront rooms and its own small airport, is what makes Puerto Escondido a complete surf destination rather than a one-note wave.
Best months
The biggest, most powerful swells hit Zicatela from roughly May through October, rainy season timing that also brings the most consistent barrels and draws the pro surf crowd. November through April is calmer and drier overall, smaller swells, cleaner mornings, and the easiest window for beginners working the bays at Carrizalillo and La Punta. Water stays warm year-round, no wetsuit needed at any time of year.
Getting there & around
Fly directly into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), with connections from Mexico City and Oaxaca City, or take a scenic but long bus ride from Oaxaca City (about 7-9 hours through the mountains). The town is compact and walkable, with Zicatela, La Punta, and Carrizalillo all within a short taxi ride of each other. Board rental and walk-up lessons are easy to find outside peak December-February and Semana Santa weeks, when it's worth booking a day or two ahead.
