Scuba Diving in Riviera MayaMX
The Playa del Carmen-Tulum corridor above the world's two longest underwater cave systems: the global capital of cavern and cave diving.
Why here
Under this coast run Sac Actun and Ox Bel Ha, the two longest underwater cave systems on earth, and above them sits the global capital of overhead-environment diving: the place technical divers fly to for the training ladder from guided cavern dives through TDI full cave and rebreather, in the schools where much of modern sidemount technique was developed. The diving itself is unrepeatable, gin-clear fresh water, haloclines, the light beams of Dos Ojos, The Pit's depth, Angelita's hydrogen-sulfide river, and it runs at a constant 24 to 25 degrees regardless of what the ocean or the weather is doing. An Open Water card and a guide get you into the cavern zone; the caves themselves demand the courses, which is why people come.
Best months
Year-round and weather-independent, which is the quiet superpower; May through September thins the crowds, and November through April pairs with the topside high season. Guided cavern dives require only Open Water certification; anything past the daylight zone requires cave training.
Getting there & around
Fly to Cancun (CUN); the dive shops of Playa del Carmen and Tulum run van logistics to the cenotes. Book cave courses weeks ahead; guided cavern days go on short notice.
