Blue Mountains, JamaicaJan Feb Nov DecJamaica Blue Mountain coffee is one of a handful of coffees in the world protected by name, and the misty ridges above Kingston are where it grows. The slopes between roughly 900 and 1,700 metres are almost permanently wrapped in cloud, so the cherries ripen slowly and develop the mild, clean, low-acid cup that made the name famous and pushed prices to among the highest anywhere. The best way to understand it is on a working estate rather than in a cafe: you walk the shaded rows on the steep hillsides, follow the bean through picking, pulping, fermentation, sun-drying and roasting, and taste the difference altitude and fog make in the cup. Two very different estates sit within an hour or so of the capital. Craighton, above Irish Town, pairs its coffee walk with a Georgian great house from 1805, while the Twyman family's Old Tavern, higher up near Section, is the estate that first won the right to process and sell its own single-estate Blue Mountain beans. Kingstonyear-roundThe Bob Marley Museum is the single most important shrine in reggae, and it sits exactly where the story happened. The colonial-era house at 56 Hope Road was Marley's home and the headquarters of his Tuff Gong label from 1974 until his death in 1981, and it was here, in December 1976, that gunmen tried to assassinate him days before a free concert. His widow Rita Marley opened the house as a museum in 1986, keeping it close to how he left it. A guided tour of about 75 minutes walks you through the main house with his bedroom and personal effects, the recording studio, a wall of gold and platinum records, the theatre and the exhibition hall, and you can still see the bullet holes preserved from the shooting. The grounds hold the One Love Cafe and a gift shop, and photography is kept out of the house itself to protect the space. Designated a protected national heritage site and an official Grammy affiliate, it is the essential stop for understanding how a musician from Trench Town became a global figure, and it pairs naturally with a Trench Town visit downtown.

Reggae SumfestMontego BayJulReggae Sumfest is the biggest reggae and dancehall festival in Jamaica, and for more than three decades its home has been Montego Bay. First held in 1993, it grew into a full week each July at the Catherine Hall entertainment complex, drawing tens of thousands to nights that run from sound-system sessions and a dancehall night to a marathon reggae bill that plays until sunrise. It is where the genre's biggest stars, from veterans to the current dancehall generation, share one stage in the music's home country, and where the crowd is as much Jamaican as visitor. The festival is now owned and run by DownSound Entertainment, which bought it from the founding Summerfest Productions in 2016. Hurricane damage to the Montego Bay venue has forced a temporary change for 2026: the festival returns as a single concentrated night, A Taste of Sumfest, on 18 July 2026 at Plantation Cove in St. Ann, while the MoBay site recovers. For anyone who wants to hear reggae and dancehall at full volume in the country that invented them, Sumfest is the event to build a July trip around.

The West Kingston public-housing scheme, built around communal yards in the 1940s, raised a generation of musicians in the 1950s and 60s, among them Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, and gave the world ska, rocksteady and finally reggae. The best place to feel that history is the Trench Town Culture Yard, the block where Marley lived as a young man, now a national heritage site owned and run by neighbourhood residents. On a guided walk through the yard you see the single-bed room he wrote about, the battered VW van the Wailers used, old guitars and murals, and you hear the story from people who grew up there, often with live music playing. UNESCO named Kingston a Creative City of Music in 2015, and standing in Trench Town makes the reason obvious. This is not a polished museum but the living neighbourhood that made the sound, and visiting it respectfully, with a local guide, is the closest you can get to reggae at its source.

Sitting on the sheltered western tip of the island, it is largely shielded from the trade winds and swell that stir up the north coast, so the water is usually calm and clear with the kind of visibility that makes for relaxed, forgiving dives. The reefs sit close in, most sites lying between about 9 and 27 metres, with coral gardens, sponges and reef fish over sites known as The Throne Room, Sharks Reef, Fantasy Reef and Treasure Reef, plus a scatter of shallow wrecks and swim-through caverns and arches for a bit of structure. The gentle conditions make Negril a fine place to learn: several small owner-run PADI shops on Norman Manley Boulevard run the full ladder of courses from a first try-dive to Divemaster, and the short boat rides mean you spend your time underwater rather than getting there. It is warm-water, low-stress Caribbean diving with a sunset on the cliffs to finish the day.

Blue Mountains, JamaicaJan Feb Mar Apr DecThe climb to Blue Mountain Peak is Jamaica's classic hike and one of the best sunrise walks in the Caribbean. The summit stands at 2,256 metres, the highest point on the island, inside the UNESCO-listed Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. The route runs about 11 to 14 kilometres each way from the trailhead above Penlyne Castle, climbing through cloud forest thick with tree ferns, wild coffee and endemic birds, with a notoriously steep pitch known as Jacob's Ladder near the top. Most walkers do it in the dark, leaving the lodges around one or two in the morning to reach the peak by dawn, when on a clear day you can see across the whole island and, some mornings, all the way to Cuba before the cloud closes in. The tradition is to overnight at a rustic mountain lodge such as Whitfield Hall the evening before, then push for the summit in the small hours. It is a demanding walk of roughly six to eight hours up, but no technical skill is needed, only fitness, a headtorch and a guide.

Accompong Maroon FestivalAccompongJanThe Accompong Maroon Festival is one of the oldest surviving freedom celebrations in the Americas. Every 6 January, the mountain town of Accompong in the Cockpit Country marks the peace treaty of 1739 that ended the First Maroon War, when the British Crown recognised the freedom and self-government of the Leeward Maroons, communities of Africans who had escaped slavery and fought the colony to a standstill from the rugged interior. The date also honours Cudjoe, the diminutive, brilliant guerrilla leader who negotiated the treaty. Accompong is still a semi-autonomous Maroon territory with its own colonel and council, and on festival day its population swells from a few hundred to thousands. The day begins before dawn with a private ceremony, then opens into the blowing of the abeng, the cow-horn that once carried messages across the hills, goombay and gumbe drumming, singing, storytelling and a communal march to the sacred Kindah tree, where unsalted pork is cooked the old way. It is a living act of remembrance rather than a show put on for visitors, and outsiders are welcomed to witness it. For anyone drawn to the deeper history of the Caribbean and of resistance to slavery, there is nothing else quite like it.
