Scuba Diving in Negril
A laid-back resort town on Jamaica's western tip, Negril is known for its seven-mile beach, cliff-top sunsets at the West End, and calm, clear diving. Sheltered on the leeward side of the island, its reefs, coral gardens and a handful of small wrecks and swim-through caverns lie in warm, protected water a short boat ride offshore.
Why here
Negril is the easiest and most reliable diving in Jamaica. Sitting on the sheltered western tip of the island, it is largely shielded from the trade winds and swell that stir up the north coast, so the water is usually calm and clear with the kind of visibility that makes for relaxed, forgiving dives. The reefs sit close in, most sites lying between about 9 and 27 metres, with coral gardens, sponges and reef fish over sites known as The Throne Room, Sharks Reef, Fantasy Reef and Treasure Reef, plus a scatter of shallow wrecks and swim-through caverns and arches for a bit of structure. The gentle conditions make Negril a fine place to learn: several small owner-run PADI shops on Norman Manley Boulevard run the full ladder of courses from a first try-dive to Divemaster, and the short boat rides mean you spend your time underwater rather than getting there. It is warm-water, low-stress Caribbean diving with a sunset on the cliffs to finish the day.
Best months
Water is warm all year, roughly 26 to 29 degrees, so a shorty or 3mm suit is plenty. Negril's leeward position keeps conditions calm and visibility good for much of the year; winter can bring the occasional windier spell. Most sites run 9 to 27 metres, suiting everyone from first-timers to certified divers, and the reefs are protected, so take nothing and touch nothing. Book with the small local PADI operators along Norman Manley Boulevard, who run try-dives, certification courses and guided reef dives.
Getting there & around
Negril is about 90 minutes by road from Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport, the usual arrival point, and its dive shops cluster along Norman Manley Boulevard behind Seven Mile Beach, with the cliff hotels at the West End nearby. The operators offer free pickup and drop-off within the Negril strip, and boat rides to the reefs are short. No car is needed once you are in town.
