Jamaica's capital and the birthplace of ska, rocksteady and reggae, Kingston is the island's cultural engine. The city holds the Trench Town yards where reggae was born, the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, the Tuff Gong studios and a UNESCO City of Music designation, all set below the Blue Mountains on the world's seventh-largest natural harbour.

The Bob Marley Museum is the single most important shrine in reggae, and it sits exactly where the story happened. The colonial-era house at 56 Hope Road was Marley's home and the headquarters of his Tuff Gong label from 1974 until his death in 1981, and it was here, in December 1976, that gunmen tried to assassinate him days before a free concert. His widow Rita Marley opened the house as a museum in 1986, keeping it close to how he left it. A guided tour of about 75 minutes walks you through the main house with his bedroom and personal effects, the recording studio, a wall of gold and platinum records, the theatre and the exhibition hall, and you can still see the bullet holes preserved from the shooting. The grounds hold the One Love Cafe and a gift shop, and photography is kept out of the house itself to protect the space. Designated a protected national heritage site and an official Grammy affiliate, it is the essential stop for understanding how a musician from Trench Town became a global figure, and it pairs naturally with a Trench Town visit downtown.

The museum is open for guided tours through the day, generally from mid-morning to late afternoon and often closed on Sundays, so check current hours before visiting. Entry is by the timed guided tour only, lasting around 75 minutes, and photography is not permitted inside the main house. Allow extra time for the cafe, gallery and gift shop. Kingston is warm year round; mornings are the most comfortable time to visit.
Getting there & around
The Bob Marley Museum is at 56 Hope Road in uptown Kingston, close to the New Kingston hotel district and easy to reach by taxi. It is an easy pairing with the Trench Town Culture Yard downtown for a full day of reggae history, and with the Blue Mountains just above the city. Tickets are bought on site for the next available guided tour; the museum shop and One Love Cafe are open to visitors without a tour ticket.
