Music at the Source in Kingston
Jamaica's capital and the birthplace of ska, rocksteady and reggae, Kingston is the island's cultural engine. The city holds the Trench Town yards where reggae was born, the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, the Tuff Gong studios and a UNESCO City of Music designation, all set below the Blue Mountains on the world's seventh-largest natural harbour.

Trench Town is where reggae was born. The West Kingston public-housing scheme, built around communal yards in the 1940s, raised a generation of musicians in the 1950s and 60s, among them Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, and gave the world ska, rocksteady and finally reggae. The best place to feel that history is the Trench Town Culture Yard, the block where Marley lived as a young man, now a national heritage site owned and run by neighbourhood residents. On a guided walk through the yard you see the single-bed room he wrote about, the battered VW van the Wailers used, old guitars and murals, and you hear the story from people who grew up there, often with live music playing. UNESCO named Kingston a Creative City of Music in 2015, and standing in Trench Town makes the reason obvious. This is not a polished museum but the living neighbourhood that made the sound, and visiting it respectfully, with a local guide, is the closest you can get to reggae at its source.

The Culture Yard is open through the day for guided visits, and going with the resident guides is both the point and the sensible way to see Trench Town, which is a working inner-city community. Tours are modestly priced, roughly US$20 to US$40 depending on how much of the neighbourhood you walk, and are best arranged ahead. Live-music and event days add to the experience. Kingston is hot and low-lying year round, so mornings are the most comfortable time.

The Trench Town Culture Yard is at First Street, Trench Town, in West Kingston, a short drive from downtown and about 20 to 30 minutes from the New Kingston hotels. Because it sits in a working inner-city district, most visitors come with a local guide or on an arranged tour rather than wandering in alone, and the Culture Yard's own guides run the visit on site. It pairs naturally with the Bob Marley Museum uptown on Hope Road for a full day of reggae history.
