Why go
Reggae Sumfest is the biggest reggae and dancehall festival in Jamaica, and for more than three decades its home has been Montego Bay. First held in 1993, it grew into a full week each July at the Catherine Hall entertainment complex, drawing tens of thousands to nights that run from sound-system sessions and a dancehall night to a marathon reggae bill that plays until sunrise. It is where the genre's biggest stars, from veterans to the current dancehall generation, share one stage in the music's home country, and where the crowd is as much Jamaican as visitor. The festival is now owned and run by DownSound Entertainment, which bought it from the founding Summerfest Productions in 2016. Hurricane damage to the Montego Bay venue has forced a temporary change for 2026: the festival returns as a single concentrated night, A Taste of Sumfest, on 18 July 2026 at Plantation Cove in St. Ann, while the MoBay site recovers. For anyone who wants to hear reggae and dancehall at full volume in the country that invented them, Sumfest is the event to build a July trip around.

What to expect
The festival normally runs across a week in mid-to-late July, with the two big concert nights at the end of the week. July in Jamaica is hot and humid with the chance of a passing shower, and the main shows are open-air and run through the night into early morning, so plan for late nights and pace the heat. Tickets are sold as single-night passes or a full festival package through the official site, and the headline nights sell strongly. Check the official source each year for dates and the current venue.
Getting there & around
Montego Bay has Jamaica's second international airport, Sangster, so it is the easiest festival city to reach and full of hotels, though rooms around Sumfest fill early. The usual Catherine Hall venue is close to the resort strip. The one-night 2026 edition moves east to Plantation Cove in St. Ann, roughly halfway between Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay and about ninety minutes from Montego Bay, so check the venue for the year you travel and arrange transport back late at night in advance.
