Every road out of the valley floor goes up: the Coll de la Gallina and its brutal Els Cortals d'Encamp ramp, the long Coll d'Ordino, the Port de Cabus gravel wall, and the Port d'Envalira, at 2,408 metres the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees. You can link half a dozen category-one cols in a single ride and finish back in the same valley. Pro teams train here in summer for the altitude, the roads are quiet and well surfaced, and it is a place to come and climb rather than roll along flat. Local operators will guide the cols with a support car.

Dog Sledding

GrandvaliraJan Feb Mar DecGrandvalira is the easiest place in the Pyrenees to drive a dog sled. At the Grau Roig sector, up near the Port d'Envalira, RocRoi runs mushing on marked snow circuits behind teams of Nordic huskies, with a professional musher on every sled. You take the runners yourself on the longer rides rather than just riding along, learning to steer and brake the team through the snow-covered forest, and can go from a short two kilometre loop up to a five kilometre run or a ten kilometre night outing with dinner. It is a genuine winter-sport add-on to a ski trip, run by the resort's long-standing adventure operator rather than a one-off novelty.

Escaldes-Engordanyyear-roundThe Museu Carmen Thyssen Andorra is the country's most serious art address, set on the shopping spine of Escaldes-Engordany in the granite Hostal Valira building. It shows the private collection of Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, one of the largest private art holdings in the world, and rather than a fixed hang it stages a new themed exhibition each year drawn from that collection, moving through nineteenth and twentieth century European painting from Impressionism to the modern. It was shortlisted for the European Museum of the Year in 2018. A short walk away, Escaldes also has the Caldea thermal spa, so a museum morning and a hot-spring afternoon pair naturally in the same town.

Festival Internacional de Jazz Escaldes-EngordanyEscaldes-EngordanyJulThe Festival Internacional de Jazz d'Escaldes-Engordany is the oldest reason to be in Andorra in July, a jazz festival the parish has run since 1985, when it opened with a Ray Charles concert. After a long pause it came back in 2022 and has grown fast; the 2026 edition drew 6,400 people over a week. Ticketed evening concerts by international names fill the Prat del Roure hall, while free open-air sets and late-night jam sessions spill onto Coprinceps square in the heart of the spa town. Chucho Valdes, Joshua Redman and Paquito D'Rivera have played the recent bills. It is small, walkable and unusually big-name for a country this size, and easy to fold into a summer trip to the Pyrenees.

Trail 100 Andorra by UTMBOrdinoJunTrail 100 Andorra by UTMB is the reason to be in Ordino in June, the Andorran round of the global UTMB World Series and one of the toughest, most scenic weeks on the trail-running calendar. The event took over from the long-running Andorra Ultra Trail and now runs five distances out of Ordino, from a 10 kilometre taster to the 105 kilometre Ultra with 6,800 metres of climbing over the high ridges of the Pyrenees. Runners chase Running Stones toward a place at the UTMB Mont-Blanc finals in Chamonix, and the northern parish of stone villages fills with an international field. Whether you race the short course or watch the Ultra grind through the mountain aid stations, it is trail running at altitude in one of Europe's smallest countries.

ComapedrosaJul Aug SepComapedrosa is the roof of Andorra, a 2,942 metre summit above the village of Arinsal at the head of a granite natural park of glacial lakes and alpine pasture. The standard ascent climbs from Arinsal past the Estanys de les Truites and a mountain refuge to a top that looks out over three countries of Pyrenees. It is also the high point of the Ronda dels Cims and the country-circling GRP, and links into the wider GR-11 traverse of the range. To the east, the UNESCO-listed Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley offers the softer, historical counterpart, a car-free cultural landscape of shepherds' huts and old iron trails. Comapedrosa is the one every hiker wants, a real mountain day rather than a stroll, and best done with a guide while snow lingers.

Falles d'AndorraAndorra la VellaJunThe Falles d'Andorra are the country's fire festival, held on the night of Sant Joan around the summer solstice, and part of the wider Summer Solstice Fire Festivals of the Pyrenees that UNESCO recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015. Young fallaires carry flaming torches down from the mountainside into the towns, tracing lines of fire through the dark before a great bonfire is lit in the square, a rite marking the passage into adulthood and the renewal of the community. Andorra la Vella, Encamp and Sant Julia de Loria all keep the tradition, with folk dancing, shared meals and the smell of woodsmoke. There is no ticket and no stage, just a living custom you are welcome to watch.
