Dog Sledding in Grandvalira
The largest ski domain in the Pyrenees, linking the Andorran sectors of Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Encamp, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa across the eastern mountains, with around 210 kilometers of piste and a season that runs from December into April.
Why here
Grandvalira is the easiest place in the Pyrenees to drive a dog sled. At the Grau Roig sector, up near the Port d'Envalira, RocRoi runs mushing on marked snow circuits behind teams of Nordic huskies, with a professional musher on every sled. You take the runners yourself on the longer rides rather than just riding along, learning to steer and brake the team through the snow-covered forest, and can go from a short two kilometer loop up to a five kilometer run or a ten kilometer night outing with dinner. It is a genuine winter-sport add-on to a ski trip, run by the resort's long-standing adventure operator rather than a one-off novelty.
Best months
Mushing runs through the ski season, roughly December to March, and depends on snow cover and weather, so circuits and distances change day to day. It is warm work but cold standing, so dress for the mountain, and the Grau Roig meeting point sits high near Port d'Envalira. Rides are guided and suit beginners with no experience; children ride with an adult.
Getting there & around
The RocRoi base is at the Cubil car park in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, reached by car up the CG-2 toward Pas de la Casa or by ski shuttle within the resort. Book ahead online, especially in holidays, and allow time to reach the high meeting point. It combines easily with a Grandvalira ski day.
