Yushan, or Jade Mountain, rises to 3,952 metres on the border of Chiayi, Nantou and Kaohsiung, the highest peak in Taiwan and in Northeast Asia. Protected inside Yushan National Park, the standard route climbs from the Tataka trailhead through cloud forest and alpine scrub to a rocky summit ridge, with an overnight at the high Paiyun Lodge governed by a permit lottery.

Yushan is Taiwan's rooftop and the highest mountain in Northeast Asia at 3,952 metres, and reaching its summit for sunrise is the country's great mountain ambition. The standard route starts at the Tataka trailhead near Alishan, climbing about 8.5 kilometres to Paiyun Lodge at 3,402 metres, then pushing on before dawn up a switchbacked headwall to a narrow summit that on a clear morning looks out over a sea of peaks and cloud. It is a strenuous but non-technical walk, no ropes or ice axes needed in the main season, which makes it one of the most accessible 3,900-metre summits anywhere. Access is tightly capped: you need a national park entry permit and a police permit, and the real bottleneck is a bed at Paiyun Lodge, allocated by lottery with a small daily quota held for foreign climbers. An English-speaking guide company can enter the lottery, arrange the permits and transport, and lead the climb safely, which is why most overseas visitors go guided.
Best months
The main climbing season runs from spring to autumn, roughly April to November, when the trail is usually free of snow and ice; December to March can bring winter conditions to the summit ridge that call for crampons, an ice axe and a winter-competent guide. Even in summer the summit is cold and windy before dawn, often near freezing, so warm layers and a headtorch are essential. Afternoons bring cloud and the chance of thunderstorms, so summit pushes are made at first light. The Paiyun Lodge bed, which comes with your permit, is the limiting factor, so plan several months ahead.
Getting there & around
The Tataka trailhead sits above Alishan, reached via Chiayi or the Alishan area; most guided trips include transport from a city such as Taipei, Taichung or Chiayi. The climb is normally done over two days with a night at Paiyun Lodge, whose bed doubles as your permit, so the whole trip hinges on winning the lodge lottery, which opens months in advance and reserves a limited daily quota for foreign climbers. Meals and sleeping-bag rental at the lodge are booked separately. Guided operators handle the permit applications, the lottery entry, transfers and mountain leadership.
