Mountaineering / Summits in Mount KenyaKE
Africa's second-highest mountain, an eroded volcano of jagged peaks, tarns, and equatorial glaciers rising to 5,199 metres, quieter and wilder than its famous neighbor to the south.
Why here
Mount Kenya is the connoisseur's African peak: where Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude hike in a queue, Mount Kenya offers empty trails through giant groundsel valleys, a trekking summit at Point Lenana (4,985m) reached in four to five days, and, for climbers, the twin rock summits of Batian and Nelion, genuine alpine rock climbs on equatorial granite that rank among the world's great mountaineering objectives. The circuits between huts and tarns are as beautiful as any walking country in Africa, and the mountain's relative obscurity keeps costs at a fraction of Kilimanjaro's while the experience runs deeper.
Best months
The dry windows are January-February and July-October, with clear mornings and afternoon cloud build-up the daily rhythm; the April-June and November rains soak the trails. Point Lenana requires no technical skills but real acclimatization, typically four to five days up. Batian and Nelion are multi-pitch rock climbs (around 20 pitches) for experienced climbers with a guide, best in the January-February window for the standard routes.
Getting there & around
Fly into Nairobi (NBO) and drive about three hours to the trailhead towns of Naro Moru, Nanyuki, or Chogoria; the Chogoria-up, Sirimon-down traverse is the scenic classic. Park fees are payable to Kenya Wildlife Service and guides are effectively essential; book operators two to four weeks ahead outside holidays. Pack for equatorial mountain weather: sun at noon, frost at dawn.
