Why here

Kathmandu is the staging point for most Himalayan mountaineering. For those stepping into high-altitude climbing for the first time, Island Peak (6,189m) above the Khumbu is one of the most logical first objectives in the world: it requires crampon and fixed-rope technique but is achievable for fit, well-prepared climbers without prior summit experience. Mera Peak (6,476m) is less technical and slightly higher. Both sit above the Everest Base Camp trail, so the approach combines a trekking peak summit with one of the great Himalayan walks. Kathmandu itself rewards extra days: Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, the Durbar Squares.

Best months

Pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (October to November) are the two viable windows. October and November have the clearest skies and best visibility. March and April are warmer with more cloud but less crowded on the trails. The monsoon (June to September) makes most high routes dangerous. Altitude acclimatization is not optional; rushing the ascent profile is the leading cause of evacuations on trekking peaks.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). Trekking peaks above the Khumbu require a domestic flight to Lukla (35 minutes), which is notorious for weather delays that can stack up for days. Budget extra days at each end. All trekking peak permits are arranged through licensed agencies in Kathmandu. Reputable agencies handle permits, Sherpa guides, porters, gear, and insurance. Do not attempt to arrange permits independently; the system runs through registered outfitters.
