Mountaineering / Summits in Mount OlympusGR
The original summit: the 2,918-meter seat of the gods, rising straight from the Aegean coast as Greece's highest peak and first national park.
Why here
Olympus is the summit the word comes from: the mythological seat of the gods, Greece's highest peak at 2,918 meters, and its first national park, rising almost straight from the Aegean in one of Europe's biggest base-to-summit reliefs. The classic itinerary is a two-day rite: hike from Prionia to the Spilios Agapitos refuge at 2,060 meters, then scramble the exposed final push to Mytikas at dawn, helmet on, with guides supplying ropes for the nervous. Certified guides from the Hellenic Mountain Guides Association run it all summer, and winter ascents keep the mountain honest for alpinists. Few summits anywhere carry this much story per meter.
Best months
June through September is the season, with refuges open mid-May to October; September is clear and quiet after the July-August crowds on the E4 trail. The Mytikas finish is an exposed scramble, not a walk. Winter climbs run February-March for experienced parties only.
Getting there & around
Fly to Thessaloniki (SKG), 90 minutes to the base town of Litochoro. Book the refuge well ahead for July and August; guides handle group gear.
