Why here

The Matterhorn is the obvious draw, but Zermatt's value for mountaineers goes beyond a single peak. The area has 38 peaks above 4,000m within reach, and the guided route infrastructure is among the most developed in the Alps. The Matterhorn Hornli Ridge is the standard route: it involves serious mixed scrambling above 3,000m of elevation and is guide-mandatory for most visitors. Outside of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Breithorn, and Pollux are achievable objectives at different skill levels. Zermatt works as a serious climbing destination across a wide range of experience, from first alpine season to career-level alpinism.

Best months

The main season is July to mid-September. July and August see the heaviest traffic on the Matterhorn, with the Hornli Hut fully booked months in advance. Early July carries residual snow on the ridge; late August and September often have better rock conditions and shorter queues. Weather on the upper mountain changes fast, and summit-day decisions are made with guides the morning of. The Matterhorn is genuinely serious and has a high fatality rate; partner carefully with your guide agency.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Zermatt is car-free. Train from Zurich takes 3.5 hours via Brig and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. The town is well-equipped with gear rental, guide agencies, and mountain huts for multi-day approaches. The Hornli Hut for Matterhorn ascents books out months in advance in peak season.
