Why here

Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain on earth and one of the Seven Summits, but it requires no technical climbing on the standard routes. This is the distinction that makes it useful for RTG: Kilimanjaro is the right objective for someone who wants a genuine high-altitude summit experience, including acclimatization management, multi-day expedition logistics, and the physical reality of 5,895m, without needing ropes, crampons, or a climbing background. The Machame Route (6 days) and the Lemosho Route (7-8 days) are the two recommended routes for proper acclimatization. Moshi is a pleasant base town with good infrastructure and a helpful local guide community.

Best months

Two main climbing windows: January to February (short dry season) and June to October (long dry season). The long dry season is more reliable. April and May bring the heaviest rain. The summit crater at 5,895m can hit -20C regardless of season; layering for serious cold is standard even in summer. The main challenge on Kilimanjaro is not technical difficulty but altitude: slow ascent, good hydration, and listening to your guide are what determine success.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), with direct connections from Amsterdam, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and Doha. Moshi is 50 minutes from the airport. All climbers must be accompanied by licensed KINAPA guides, which operators provide as part of standard packages. Budget carefully for porter and guide tips, which are substantial and culturally important. The climbing permit fees are paid through your operator and vary by route and duration.
