The MacGillycuddy's Reeks are Ireland at its most mountainous, and Carrauntoohil is the summit everyone wants. At 1,039 metres it is the highest point in the country, set in a tight range of sharp ridges, glacial corries and mountain lakes that feels far bigger than its modest height suggests. The classic ascent by the Devil's Ladder is a steep, loose scramble, while the Coomloughra Horseshoe links the three highest peaks in Ireland on one exposed ridge walk, and Brother O'Shea's Gully offers a scenic middle line. This is proper mountain terrain: the weather changes fast, cloud swallows the tops, and the ground is rough and unforgiving, so most people go with a guide who knows the routes and the escapes. Reach the summit cross on a clear day and the reward is a view over the lakes of Killarney, the Ring of Kerry and out to the Atlantic. For a summit day in Ireland, this is the one.
Best months
The main season is April to October, when days are longer and the ground clearest, though the mountain is serious in any month. Weather is the defining factor, with rapid cloud, wind and rain even in summer, so navigation and hill experience matter. Winter brings snow and ice to the gullies, turning ascents into technical outings for equipped, experienced climbers only. Guided groups run year-round in suitable conditions.
Getting there & around
The range sits southwest of Killarney in County Kerry, with the main access points at Cronin's Yard and around Beaufort, roughly forty minutes to an hour from Killarney town by road. A car or arranged transfer reaches the trailheads. Go with a guide unless you are experienced in mountain navigation, carry proper hill kit and food, and start early to allow for the changeable weather and a long day on rough ground.

GuideThe Lodge and Reeks Guiding Company runs guided ascents of Carrauntoohil and walks across the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, led by mountain guide John O'Sullivan from a base at Churchtown near Beaufort. It guides the peak daily from April to October, taking in routes such as Brother O'Shea's Gully and tailoring days to the group's fitness, and runs a lodge for walkers. It is a small local operator focused on the Reeks rather than a nationwide programme.
