Mountaineering / Summits in ImlilMA
A Berber village at 1,740 metres in the High Atlas, ninety minutes from Marrakech and the base for Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Mule trains, guide bureaus, and walnut groves run the valley.
Why here
Toubkal is the most achievable great summit in Africa: at 4,167 metres it is the continent's highest peak north of Kilimanjaro, climbed in two days from Imlil on a non-technical route, refuge night included, with sunrise from the summit reaching from the Sahara to the Atlantic haze. The village is the model of an organized mountain base: Morocco's first guides association was founded here in the late 1980s, guiding inside Toubkal National Park has been mandatory and regulated since 2019, and the mule-supported expedition style keeps packs light and the local economy fed. The gap between effort and reward, a long weekend from Europe for a genuine 4,000-metre summit, has few equals anywhere.
Best months
The standard trekking season runs April through October: early summer and September offer the best balance of stable weather and clear air, while July-August afternoons run hot low down. November through March turns Toubkal into a genuine winter climb with ice axe, crampons, and cold-weather experience required, beautiful, but a different undertaking. A licensed guide is mandatory in the national park year-round.
Getting there & around
Fly into Marrakech (RAK) and drive about 90 minutes to Imlil; shared taxis run from the city. Book guided ascents a week or more ahead in the summer peak, or arrange on arrival through the village guide bureau in shoulder season. The two-day itinerary overnights at the Toubkal refuges around 3,200 metres; bring layers, and rent any missing kit in Imlil itself.
