A high meadow plateau at around 3,600 metres in the Zaalay (Trans-Alay) range of southern Kyrgyzstan, reached from the city of Osh. Achik Tash is the base-camp staging ground for Lenin Peak, one of the world's most accessible 7,000-metre mountains, and fills each summer with expedition tents and grazing horses.
Why here
Lenin Peak, 7,134 metres on the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border, is widely called the easiest of the world's 7,000-metre summits, and Achik Tash is where every attempt begins. The mountain has no technical crux on its normal route, so with the right acclimatisation and weather it is within reach of fit climbers stepping up from lower peaks, which makes it a genuine first big-altitude objective rather than an elite one. From the base camp meadow at 3,600 metres the route climbs through Camp 1, Advanced Base Camp on the glacier moraine, and high camps at around 5,300 and 6,100 metres before the long summit day. Established Kyrgyz operators run the base camps, fixed logistics and rescue registration that make a self-sufficient expedition possible.
Best months
The climbing season is short and centred on July and August, when the high camps are stocked and the weather windows are most reliable. This is a serious high-altitude undertaking despite the non-technical grade: altitude, cold and sudden storms are the real dangers, and a staged acclimatisation of two to three weeks is normal. Crevasses on the glacier sections mean rope work and glacier travel skills are needed above base camp.
Getting there & around
Access is from Osh, southern Kyrgyzstan's main city, which has flights from Bishkek and beyond. It is a long day's drive, roughly five to seven hours and about 290 kilometres, from Osh to the Achik Tash base camp, often with a night in Sary-Mogol or a nearby village. Operators handle the transfer, base-camp tents and meals, and register climbers with the mountain rescue service. Bring a full high-altitude kit and budget two to three weeks for the round trip.

It operates its own base-camp and higher-camp infrastructure on the mountain, with an Advanced Base Camp around 4,200 metres and camps at roughly 5,200 and 6,150 metres, provides guides and porters, and registers climbers with the rescue service. Multi-week programmes are run directly by the company.
