Canyoning in Wadi MujibJO
A narrow basalt gorge carved by the Mujib River as it drops 900m to the Dead Sea. Jordan's answer to the slot canyon — a wade-and-swim route through cathedral walls, managed by the RSCN as a biosphere reserve.
Why here
Wadi Mujib is a categorically different experience from European technical canyoning — a wade-and-swim descent through a narrow basalt gorge, where the Mujib River drops 900 metres to the Dead Sea over 70km. The RSCN (Royal Society for Conservation of Nature) manages access as part of the Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve, keeping numbers controlled and the experience genuine. The Siq Trail (the main route) involves boulder-hopping, swimming through slots barely wide enough for a person, and following rope lines through waterfall drops — ending at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth. No abseiling or technical gear required; swimming ability and a tolerance for cold water are all you need.
Best months
RSCN opens the trail March through October; the gorge is closed in winter due to flash flood risk and in summer (June-August) because heat at the base is extreme (45°C+). March-April and October-November are the sweet spots — water levels manageable, temperatures bearable. Water in the gorge is cold year-round regardless of air temperature; bring water shoes with grip. The Siq Trail takes 2-3 hours and is a one-way descent (transport back from the Dead Sea shore is arranged by the reserve).
Getting there & around
The reserve entrance is 90 minutes from Amman or 45 minutes from the Dead Sea resorts. RSCN charges an entrance fee (approximately JOD 21-25) and all visitors must register at the trailhead. Guided tours from Amman include transport and are the easiest option; independent visitors need a rental car. Combine with a night at a Dead Sea resort — the contrast of the canyon and floating in the saltwater afterwards is one of Jordan's defining experiences.
