Canyoning in La FortunaCR
A rainforest town at the foot of Arenal Volcano, built almost entirely around adventure tourism. Waterfall canyons, hot springs, and volcano views sit within a twenty-minute drive of nearly everything.
Why here
La Fortuna turned waterfall rappelling into a genre, and it still does it better than almost anywhere. Fixed-anchor canyon routes drop you down a sequence of waterfalls, the tallest well over a hundred feet, through rainforest canyons carved by runoff from Arenal Volcano. It reads as extreme from a photo but the actual skill floor is low: guides run the ropes, you clip in and walk backward off the edge, and the hardest part for most people is the first step. That accessibility plus the volcano backdrop is why La Fortuna shows up on more first-timer bucket lists than any other canyoning spot on the continent.
Best months
Operators run trips year-round since the canyons are fixed-anchor rappels, not river-dependent floats, and rain if anything makes the falls more dramatic. Dry season (December to April) gives the clearest skies and easiest hiking between rappels; green season (May to November) brings afternoon downpours and fuller, louder waterfalls. Water and air stay warm enough in both seasons that cold is never the limiting factor.
Getting there & around
Fly into San Jose (SJO) and drive about three hours northwest, or connect via Liberia (LIR) at a similar distance. La Fortuna itself is a compact, walkable adventure-tourism town, so once you arrive, canyoning outfitters, hot springs, and volcano hikes are all a short shuttle ride apart. Same-day and next-day bookings are normal outside peak holiday weeks.

ABC Canyoning
OutfitterRuns canyoning deeper into the Peñas Blancas River canyon near the Children's Eternal Rainforest, a quieter and less trafficked alternative to the main La Fortuna routes. Five rappels down a sequence of waterfalls, with a stronger rainforest-immersion feel than the more commercial operations closer to town.
Pure Trek Canyoning
OutfitterLa Fortuna's best-known canyoning operator, running rappels through its own maintained canyon since 2001. The route includes the signature Monkey Drop rappel and is built for mixed groups, from nervous first-timers to travelers who have done via ferrata or climbing before.
