Canyoning in QueenstownNZ
New Zealand's adventure sports capital, set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables mountain range as backdrop. The staging point for bungee, heli-skiing, rafting, and some of the country's most scenic skydiving.
Why here
Queenstown's adventure infrastructure has been built around world-class terrain — the schist gorges and glacier-carved valleys surrounding the town offer canyoning of genuine technical quality, not just commercial spectacle. The Routeburn and Shotover catchments have multiple distinct canyon routes across grades, and operators here enforce the same safety rigor as the bungee and rafting companies that put Queenstown on the map. In summer (November-March) the combination of long days, temperate water, and the wider adventure circuit makes it one of the world's best places to string together multiple experiences.
Best months
Southern Hemisphere summer (November-March) is the prime window — long days, water temperatures around 14-18°C, and stable alpine weather. The schist rock walls are spectacular in morning light. Winter (June-August) sees cold water and shorter days; most operators run year-round but reduce to guided-only formats in colder months. Waterfalls from snowmelt can be dramatic in November-December.
Getting there & around
All operators run minibus transfers from Queenstown town centre to canyon departure points. Half-day trips are the standard (3-4 hours); full-day technical programs available for experienced canyoneers. Prices NZD 200-280 per person. Queenstown is 30 minutes from Frankton Airport — fly Auckland-Queenstown direct. Booking ahead by at least 48 hours recommended in peak December-January.
