Canyoning in Titou Gorge
A narrow volcanic slot canyon on the edge of Morne Trois Pitons National Park above Trafalgar and Laudat, where a rainforest stream has cut a deep cleft in the rock that ends at a waterfall in a warm, chest-deep pool. Fed by hot springs and famous as a Pirates of the Caribbean filming spot, the gorge is the gateway to Dominica's canyoning in the surrounding waterfall canyons.
Why here
Dominica is the best canyoning destination in the Caribbean, and the gorges around Titou Gorge and Trafalgar are where it happens. The island's young volcanic rock and enormous rainfall have carved a maze of steep, water-filled slot canyons in the hills above Roseau, and canyoning here means working down them the only way you can, rappelling over the lip of waterfalls, sliding down water-polished chutes, jumping into plunge pools and swimming through sculpted corridors of black basalt with the forest closing overhead. Titou Gorge itself is the iconic image, a narrow flooded cleft you swim into toward a hidden waterfall, warmed by a hot spring at its mouth, and the working canyons nearby drop through a series of falls in a half-day descent. It is world-class terrain, remote-feeling yet close to the capital, and because guided trips include full training on a practice wall first, complete beginners and children can do it. Few places pack this much clean, warm, tropical canyoning into such a small and accessible area.
Best months
Canyoning runs year round in Dominica's warm water, but flow depends on rain: the drier season from December to June gives more predictable, safer conditions, while the wet season raises flash-flood risk and trips are called off when rivers run high after heavy rain. Water is warm enough that a shorty wetsuit and helmet, supplied by operators, are all you need. No prior experience is required on the standard descents, which include instruction on a training wall before you enter the canyon, and children from about six can take part. Expect a half-day out, with a walk in through rainforest, several rappels and jumps, and swimming between drops.
Getting there & around
The canyons sit in the hills around Trafalgar and Laudat, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road above Roseau, so trips are easy to run as a half-day from the capital or the cruise berth and operators include transport. All technical gear, wetsuit, harness, helmet and ropes is provided, and the standard descents need no experience, just a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to swim. Wear a swimsuit and closed-toe shoes that can get wet and bring a towel and dry clothes. Book a licensed canyoning operator rather than a general guide, as the descents need canyon-specific training and rigging.
