Canyoning in ChaniaGR
Crete's northwestern gateway — a historic Venetian harbor town that serves as the access point for Samaria Gorge and the White Mountains canyon system, two of Europe's finest canyon walks.
Why here
Samaria Gorge is the reason to come — a 16km descent through a 300m-deep limestone canyon, ending at the Libyan Sea village of Agia Roumeli. It is one of Europe's most dramatic gorge walks, and the combination of the White Mountains backdrop, the final swim in the Libyan Sea, and the ferry return to Chora Sfakion makes it a complete day experience. Imbros Gorge (8km, open year-round) is the lower-key alternative for shorter time windows or off-season visits. Neither route requires technical climbing — both are accessible with standard hiking fitness and appropriate footwear.
Best months
Samaria opens May 1 and closes in late October — outside this window the gorge is subject to flash flooding and is officially closed. May-June is the ideal window: waterfalls still running from snowmelt, wildflowers out, temperatures manageable in the gorge. July-August is very hot by midday — an early start (6:15 or 7:30am bus) is essential. The 16km route takes 4-7 hours depending on pace. Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners required.
Getting there & around
Bus from Chania central station to Xyloskalo (gorge entrance at 1250m) — 6:15 and 7:30am departures. Ferry from Agia Roumeli back to Chora Sfakion (€12), then bus back to Chania — included in most organized day trips. Entrance fee €5. Guide services add small group safety and local knowledge; independent travel is also straightforward.
