Canyoning in BadianPH
A municipality on Cebu's southwest coast where the Matutinao river carves a turquoise canyon down to the sea, ending at the three tiers of Kawasan Falls. Home of the Philippines' signature canyoneering run.
Why here
The Kawasan canyoneering run is the Philippines' headline adventure day: three to four hours descending the Matutinao river's impossibly blue canyon by cliff jump, natural slide, and swim, finishing under the falls themselves. The format is jump-forward rather than rope-heavy, with leaps from two to ten-plus metres, every one optional, which makes it a thrill accessible to any confident swimmer. Regulation arrived after the activity boomed: operations now run under Badian's municipal tourism office with accredited operators, fixed pricing, helmets, and life vests, so the canyon's Wild-West era is over and the right operator makes it as safe as it is photogenic.
Best months
Runs year-round; the December-May dry season brings the bluest water and the most reliable flow, while heavy wet-season rain (June-November) can close the canyon for a day or raise water levels enough to change the route. Operators make the call each morning. Water is refreshingly cool, canyon walls shade the midday heat.
Getting there & around
Badian is about three hours southwest of Cebu City (CEB) by bus or car; most visitors combine it with Moalboal, 30 minutes north. Book an accredited operator rather than a beach tout; the regulated package (about 2,000 pesos plus shuttle) includes gear, guides, and the canyon entrance. Start early; the canyon gets busy from mid-morning.
