Senegal
Western Africa
West Africa's Atlantic gateway, reaching to the Cap-Vert peninsula and the westernmost point of mainland Africa. Senegal pairs the surf and music of Dakar with the UNESCO island of Goree, the mangrove maze of the Sine-Saloum Delta, the Djoudj bird sanctuary on the Senegal River, the pink dunes of the Lompoul desert, and the historic river town of Saint-Louis, all bound by a deep sabar-drum and teranga hospitality culture.

- Djoudj National Bird SanctuaryJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecDjoudj is ranked among the most important bird reserves on earth, a sixteen thousand hectare patchwork of open water, mudflats and reed on the Senegal River delta that UNESCO inscribed in 1981. For migratory birds crossing the Sahara it is the first freshwater they reach, and up to three million pass through in a season. The set piece is the great white pelican colony, thousands of birds nesting on the reserve's islands, alongside large numbers of greater flamingos, cormorants, herons and ducks. You explore by small boat, drifting close to the colonies at water level while a guide sorts the waders and warblers. This is a birdwatching destination of global rank rather than a general game park, best paired with the old river town of Saint-Louis nearby.
- Sine-Saloum DeltaJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecThe Saloum Delta is a five thousand square kilometre labyrinth of mangroves, tidal creeks and islands where three rivers braid into the Atlantic, listed by UNESCO in 2011 for both its biodiversity and the shell mounds built up over centuries of fishing. You move through it by pirogue or kayak, threading channels lined with red mangrove where herons, kingfishers and African fish eagles hunt. The headline is the birdlife. The Ile aux Oiseaux and other sandbanks hold breeding colonies of great white pelicans, royal terns and gulls, and in the northern winter the flats fill with European migrants. Around Palmarin the lagoons add greater flamingos, spotted hyenas and troops of patas monkeys, so a delta trip is as much wildlife safari as boat ride.
