Between Dakar and Saint-Louis, a pocket of orange Sahara-like dunes rolls almost to the Atlantic near the village of Lompoul-sur-Mer, a compact desert of shifting sand famous for its sunrise and sunset light and its Mauritanian-style tented camps.
Why here
Lompoul is a small sea of orange dunes wedged between the coast road and the Atlantic, close enough to the ocean that you can frame Sahara-style ridgelines with the sound of surf behind them. For photographers the appeal is light and scale packed into a compact area. At dawn and dusk the low sun rakes across the dunes and the colour shifts from ochre to deep red, with clean sculpted crests and almost no clutter. Camel trains, the tented camps and the occasional shepherd give foreground and human scale. Because the whole dune field is walkable, you can work several compositions in one golden hour rather than driving between them, then stay overnight in the sand for a dark, star-filled sky.
Best months
The dry season from November to April brings the clearest skies and the coolest walking, the best window for the desert. The dunes photograph best in the hour after sunrise and before sunset, when the sand turns red and the shadows lengthen, while midday light is flat and harsh. Wind can move sand quickly, so protect gear. Nights are dark enough for astrophotography.
Getting there & around
Lompoul-sur-Mer is about two and a half hours north of Dakar and a similar distance south of Saint-Louis, off the main road via a sand track that the desert camps will help arrange transfer for. Staying at a camp in the dunes is what puts you in position for the sunrise and sunset shoots and the night sky. Camps provide tents, meals and camel or walking access to the ridges.

Beyond the dunes at the door it arranges camel rides, guided walks and photo sessions at sunrise and sunset, with dinner under a large communal tent and open sky for the stars.
