Wildlife Safaris in Sine-Saloum Delta
Where the Sine and Saloum rivers meet the Atlantic south of Dakar, a vast maze of mangrove channels, tidal flats, sand islands and ancient shell mounds forms a UNESCO-listed delta, protected as Saloum Delta National Park and famous for its pelicans, terns and migratory shorebirds.
Why here
The Saloum Delta is a five thousand square kilometre labyrinth of mangroves, tidal creeks and islands where three rivers braid into the Atlantic, listed by UNESCO in 2011 for both its biodiversity and the shell mounds built up over centuries of fishing. You move through it by pirogue or kayak, threading channels lined with red mangrove where herons, kingfishers and African fish eagles hunt. The headline is the birdlife. The Ile aux Oiseaux and other sandbanks hold breeding colonies of great white pelicans, royal terns and gulls, and in the northern winter the flats fill with European migrants. Around Palmarin the lagoons add greater flamingos, spotted hyenas and troops of patas monkeys, so a delta trip is as much wildlife safari as boat ride.
Best months
November to April is the dry, cooler season and the peak for wintering migratory birds, while the pelican and tern colonies are active around the islands from roughly winter into spring. Mornings and late afternoons give the best light and the calmest water for pirogue and kayak trips. The rainy season from July to September is hot and humid with fewer birds.
Getting there & around
The delta is about three hours south of Dakar by road, with the villages of Ndangane, Palmarin and Toubacouta as the usual bases. Eco-lodges and local operators run pirogue and kayak excursions into the mangroves and out to the bird islands, best booked ahead. A guide is essential for navigating the channels and finding the colonies without disturbing them.
