Surfing in Dakar
Senegal's capital sits on the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa, a fast-moving Atlantic city of markets, music and surf that fans out from the Plateau to the fishing village of Ngor and the ferry pier for Goree Island.
Why here
The Dakar peninsula is the westernmost point of mainland Africa, and that geography gives it West Africa's most consistent surf. It catches swell from the north, west and south, so there is nearly always something breaking. The village of Ngor, on the northern tip, sits in front of Ngor Right, the wave Bruce Brown's 1966 film Endless Summer made famous, plus more than twenty other reef and beach breaks within a short boat or drive. This is warm-water surfing you can reach on a morning flight from Europe, with an established local surf-camp scene rather than a lone operator. Beginners learn on the mellow beach breaks around Yoff and Virage, while intermediates and up chase the reefs off Ngor Island and Ouakam.
Best months
The main swell season runs roughly October to April, when North Atlantic groundswell lights up the reefs and offshore mornings clean up the faces. Water stays warm enough for a shorty or boardshorts most of the year. Ngor Right works best on a north swell at mid tide; the beach breaks around Yoff and Virage stay surfable year-round for lessons.
Getting there & around
Fly into Dakar's Blaise Diagne International Airport, about ninety minutes from the city, then base in Ngor or Yoff on the northern tip near the breaks. The offshore spots on Ngor Island are reached by a short pirogue from Ngor village. Surf camps arrange boards, guiding and airport transfers, which smooths the first day.

Ngor Island Surf Camp
SchoolNgor Island Surf Camp has run surf trips off Dakar since 2004, giving it two decades of local knowledge on the peninsula's breaks. Licensed with the Senegalese Surf Federation, it specialises in guiding intermediate and advanced surfers to the reef in front of the camp and across the twenty-one spots around the Cap-Vert peninsula, and adds surf theory sessions, photography and board rental. The base on Ngor Island has a pool, a gym and a co-working space for longer working stays.
Ngor Surfcamp Teranga
SchoolNgor Surfcamp Teranga sits steps from Ngor Right and Ngor Left on Ngor Island, five minutes by boat from mainland Dakar. Its coaching is led by ISA-certified instructors and affiliated with the Senegalese Surf Federation, running two guided sessions a day depending on swell and tide, with video analysis for all levels. The waves out front featured in Bruce Brown's 1966 Endless Summer, and the camp holds a 4.8 rating across more than fifty Google reviews.
