Titou Gorge itself is the iconic image, a narrow flooded cleft you swim into toward a hidden waterfall, warmed by a hot spring at its mouth, and the working canyons nearby drop through a series of falls in a half-day descent. It is world-class terrain, remote-feeling yet close to the capital, and because guided trips include full training on a practice wall first, complete beginners and children can do it. Few places pack this much clean, warm, tropical canyoning into such a small and accessible area.

World Creole Music FestivalRoseauOctThe World Creole Music Festival is Dominica's flagship event and the biggest celebration of Creole music anywhere, three nights of live performance each late October at Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Roseau. Staged since 1997 by the national tourism authority as the centrepiece of the island's Independence season, it grew out of Dominica's own homegrown sound, bouyon, the fast, bass-heavy style born here in the late 1980s, and cadence-lypso, and puts it on the same bill as zouk, soca, reggae, dancehall, kompa and afrobeat from across the Creole-speaking world. Headliners come from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, Africa and the wider Caribbean diaspora alongside Dominica's own stars, and the crowd is a mix of returning diaspora, regional fans and travellers who time a trip to the island's biggest week. It lands during the Creole heritage season that also fills Roseau with jing ping bands, Creole dress and street food, so the festival is the loud heart of a fortnight of national culture rather than a standalone concert. For anyone who wants to hear Creole music at its source, this is the one weekend to be on the island.

Just north lies the island's most famous site, Champagne Reef, where geothermal vents send streams of warm bubbles up through the shallows so you dive and snorkel through what feels like a glass of champagne. The water is warm and clear, the sites sit minutes from shore in the calm western lee, and the volcanic drama underfoot is what sets Dominica apart from the rest of the region.

Morne Trois Pitons National ParkFeb Mar Apr May JunMorne Trois Pitons National Park is Dominica's hiking heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its prize is the trek to the Boiling Lake, the second-largest boiling lake in the world after New Zealand's Frying Pan Lake. The route is a full, hard day: from the village of Laudat you climb over the Morne Nicholls ridge, drop through the Valley of Desolation, a steaming moonscape of sulphur vents, hot streams and mineral-stained rock, and finish at the rim of a grey-blue cauldron 60 metres across that churns and boils where a flooded fumarole vents through the crater floor. It is one of the great walks of the Caribbean, and it links into the wider network here, the Middleham Falls trail, the Freshwater and Boeri crater lakes, and Segment 4 of the 115-mile Waitukubuli National Trail, the region's first long-distance path, which threads the park on its way up the island. The forest is dense, wet and loud with mountain whistlers and, if you are lucky, the endemic sisserou parrot. This is rainforest walking with real volcanic drama underfoot, not a stroll, and a certified guide is required on the Boiling Lake route.

Wildlife Safaris

RoseauJan Feb Mar Nov DecDominica is the only country on earth with a population of sperm whales resident year-round, and Roseau is the base for seeing them. The largest toothed predator on the planet, sperm whales gather in family units in the deep, calm water off the island's leeward west coast, where the sea floor drops past a thousand metres within sight of shore, so the giants can be reached on a short morning run rather than a long offshore slog. Skippers listen through directional hydrophones for the whales' echolocation clicks, then position the boat quietly for them to surface, log at the top and lift their flukes as they sound. Around 200 whales use these waters, best known are the matriarchal groups nicknamed by researchers who have studied them for decades, and the same trips regularly turn up pilot whales, spinner and spotted dolphins and the occasional humpback. November to March brings the whales closest to shore and the flattest seas. It is one of the most reliable sperm-whale grounds in the world and a rare chance to watch these animals from a small boat in warm, sheltered Caribbean water.

Kalinago Barana AuteKalinago Territoryyear-roundThe Kalinago Territory is the one place in the Caribbean where the region's Indigenous people still live on their own land, and visiting it is a chance to meet a living culture rather than a museum of a vanished one. The Kalinago, once called Caribs and the people who gave the sea its name, were driven off or wiped out on every other island; on Dominica's wild windward coast, a community of around three thousand holds a 3,700-acre communal territory granted in 1903 and runs its own affairs under an elected chief. The visitor gateway is Kalinago Barana Aute, the 'village by the sea', where guided walks along the Crayfish River pass thatched karbet meeting houses, a herbal-medicine garden and demonstrations of the crafts the Kalinago are known for, tightly woven larouma-reed baskets with a distinctive double weave, and the carving of a gommier tree trunk into the dugout canoes that first carried the people between islands. Walks end with drumming, dance and storytelling, and the surrounding territory holds the L'Escalier Tete Chien lava ridge and the Isulukati falls. It is quiet, remote and unshowy, and it puts you face to face with five hundred years of Caribbean survival.
