A 17,000-acre reserve of volcanic peaks, crater lakes and rainforest in Dominica's mountainous interior, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the first natural site in the eastern Caribbean. It holds the Boiling Lake, the Valley of Desolation fumaroles, Titou Gorge and the Trafalgar and Middleham waterfalls, reached from the trailhead village of Laudat above Roseau.
Why here
Morne Trois Pitons National Park is Dominica's hiking heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its prize is the trek to the Boiling Lake, the second-largest boiling lake in the world after New Zealand's Frying Pan Lake. The route is a full, hard day: from the village of Laudat you climb over the Morne Nicholls ridge, drop through the Valley of Desolation, a steaming moonscape of sulphur vents, hot streams and mineral-stained rock, and finish at the rim of a grey-blue cauldron 60 metres across that churns and boils where a flooded fumarole vents through the crater floor. It is one of the great walks of the Caribbean, and it links into the wider network here, the Middleham Falls trail, the Freshwater and Boeri crater lakes, and Segment 4 of the 115-mile Waitukubuli National Trail, the region's first long-distance path, which threads the park on its way up the island. The forest is dense, wet and loud with mountain whistlers and, if you are lucky, the endemic sisserou parrot. This is rainforest walking with real volcanic drama underfoot, not a stroll, and a certified guide is required on the Boiling Lake route.
Best months
The park is walkable year round, but the drier season from February to June gives firmer trails and better odds of a clear summit; the Boiling Lake day in particular is miserable and slippery in heavy rain and can be closed after storms. The Boiling Lake trek is 6 to 8 hours return over steep, muddy, root-tangled ground with steep drops, and hikers must go with a certified local guide, which is a park rule as much as a safety one. Bring sturdy boots, rain layers, water and food, and start early to beat afternoon cloud and rain. Shorter trails to Middleham Falls, Titou Gorge and the crater lakes suit less experienced walkers.
Getting there & around
The trailheads sit around Laudat, a mountain village about 30 to 40 minutes by road above Roseau, so most hikers base in or near the capital and drive up for an early start. A site pass is needed for the national park, sold as a day or week ticket, and the Boiling Lake route legally requires a certified guide, which local companies arrange with transport from Roseau. The Waitukubuli National Trail crosses the park as one of its 14 segments; through-hikers register with the trail's management unit. Carry cash for passes, wear boots that can get wet and muddy, and treat the Boiling Lake as a committing full-day mountain hike.
