Yoga Retreat in RishikeshIN

A pilgrimage city on the Ganges at the foot of the Himalayas, known as the Yoga Capital of the World. Home to dozens of ashrams, the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony, and a two-kilometre stretch of ghats where international seekers have come to study yoga and meditation since the Beatles' stay in 1968.

Why here

The place where yoga as a global practice was effectively born. Rishikesh sits at the point where the Ganges descends from the Himalayas to the plains, and for more than a century ashrams here have attracted seekers from across India and beyond. Today the strip of ghats and narrow lanes from Laxman Jhula to Ram Jhula contains a higher concentration of yoga schools, ashrams, and meditation centres per square kilometre than anywhere else on earth. The teaching runs deep: lineages from Sivananda to Swami Rama to Pattabhi Jois all have roots here, and studying in Rishikesh connects practice to a living tradition rather than a studio brand.

Best months

Best season is October through April — cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 10°C at night in January to 30°C in April. May and early June are hot but manageable. The monsoon (mid-June to September) brings heavy rain and river flooding; many ashrams reduce programmes or close temporarily. River crossings can be restricted during peak monsoon. The Ganges at Rishikesh remains cold year-round, and early-morning practice on the ghats is a particular experience even in winter.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Nearest airport is Jolly Grant (DED), 35km from town — direct flights from Delhi (1 hour). Alternatively, train from Delhi to Haridwar (4–5 hours) plus 30 minutes by road. Accommodation ranges from basic ashram rooms (meals included) to mid-range guesthouses. The teaching strip around Tapovan and Ram Jhula is walkable; motorbikes available for excursions. Altitude is low (~350m) — acclimatisation is not required.

Parmarth Niketan

Retreat center

One of the largest ashrams in Rishikesh, with a riverside setting on the Ganges that has been welcoming seekers since 1942. Parmarth Niketan's strength lies in its scale and continuity: hundreds of rooms, multiple temples, daily Ganga Aarti ceremonies at sunset on the ghats, and a twice-daily yoga programme that mixes traditional Hatha with pranayama and meditation. The International Yoga Festival held here each March draws teachers from across the world. The ashram is genuinely open — it funds charitable programmes including schools and medical camps — and its combination of spiritual depth and accessibility to newcomers makes it the logical starting point for first-time visitors to Rishikesh.

Rishikul Yogshala

Retreat center

A Yoga Alliance-registered school founded in 2010 with its primary campus in the Rishikesh foothills. Rishikul Yogshala offers 200-, 300-, and 500-hour teacher training programmes rooted in classical Hatha, Ashtanga, and Yin styles, attracting cohorts from over 50 countries annually. Beyond TT, the school runs 7- and 14-day retreat packages that provide a structured introduction to ashram-style living: early morning practice, two vegetarian meals, yogic philosophy lectures, and evening meditation, all included in a price that would buy two days at comparable centres in Bali or Costa Rica. The teaching standard is consistently strong across its three campuses in Rishikesh.

Sivananda Ashram

Retreat center

The ashram of Swami Sivananda's Divine Life Society, established on the Ganges banks in 1936 and one of the most influential spiritual centres in India. Sivananda Ashram is not a retreat resort — it is a working ashram with a daily schedule of 4am wake-up, morning practice, karma yoga, and satsang that reflects genuine traditions rather than wellness tourism. The teaching runs deep: courses in pranayama, raja yoga, and Vedanta philosophy are available alongside asana practice. Accommodation is austere by most visitors' standards and better for it. For practitioners serious about yoga as a life practice rather than a fitness discipline, this is among the most important addresses in the world.
